SUMMARY:BePA introduction: What can proteomics do for you?
DESCRIPTION:Many researchers use proteomics research as a tool\, e.g. in medicine\, veterinary sciences\, bioengineering\, biology\, pharmaceutical sciences\, ecology and even within art sciences. BePA is organizing workshops for these users. Building on the success of previous workshops\, including the one at our BePA meeting 2018\, a broad selection of proteomics experts from Ghent will go over the entire workflow from sample preparation\, over data acquisition to data analysis. From 2 to 5 September\, at Rustpunt \, attendees will learn the do’s and don’ts in proteomics and to design their own experiment in order to find an answer to their protein-related questions. \nThe workshop will show (young) researchers what the capabilities of proteomics are. For those preparing a project defence (e.g. FWO)\, the course will give the complete overview required to anticipate methodological questions from the jury. For starters\, we focus on the different steps of a robust experimental design\, so that they will learn the shortest route to the answer to their biological questions on proteins. For students in the final stage of their PhD\, who used proteomics along the way\, we provide everything they need to know for their PhD defence. Attendees will in no way become experts in proteomics or mass spectrometry. However\, as they collaborate with a dedicated proteomics lab (in Ghent)\, this course will teach them the language to communicate and think along. \n \nBecause sample preparation protocols are dependent on the research question\, the samples at hand\, the data acquisition methodology and on the final data analysis approach\, each lecturer will cross reference to other days in the course. We strongly encourage attendees to subscribe to the complete course\, but we also allow subscribing for only a part of the course\, most relevant to your current interest. \nThroughout the workshop\, attendees will be allowed to bring forward their own research question in order to discuss the methodological opportunities available within the field. \n \nHere is the full program: \n

SUMMARY:BePAc 2016
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the hidden depths of the proteome\nThis two-day symposium covered an exciting part of contemporary proteome science presented by excellent speakers. The conference took place on 17-18 November 2016 at the University Aula in Ghent\, Volderstraat 9\, 9000 Gent\, Belgium. \n \nThis meeting gathered young and experienced scientists alike from Belgium and surrounding countries to discuss proteomics (young scientists should surely check out the new EuPA initiative called YPIC\, the Young Proteomics Investigator Club). The central theme of the meeting was “Exploring the hidden depths of the proteome“\, because we wanted to focus on the harder\, but all the more interesting parts of the proteome. And we had some very prominent names: \n\nThursday\, November 17\n\nPlant proteomics\n\nNorbert Rolland (CNRS\, Paris\, France)\n\n“From subcellular proteomics to non-canonical chloroplast proteins”\n\n\nKathryn Lilley (Centre for Proteomics\, Cambridge\, UK)\n\n“Challenges in assigning the subcellular location of proteins”\n\n\n\n\nBreak-out session (meet the expert): Data Analysis\nComputational Proteomics\n\nJuan Antonio Vizcaíno (EMBL-EBI\, Cambridge\, UK)\n\n“Mining the hidden proteome using hundreds of public proteomics datasets”\n\n\nDavid Fenyö (NYU School of medicine\, New York\, US)\n\n“Proteogenomics”\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, November 18\n\nComplex PTM analysis\n\nTiziana Bonaldi (IFOM-IEO\, Milan\, Italy)\n\n“Quantitative MS-proteomics to study histone post-translational modifications and chromatin plasticity\, in basic and clinical research”\n\n\nClaire Eyers (Institute of Integrative Biology\, Liverpool\, UK)\n\n“The bottom to top of NF-kB signalling”\n\n\n\n\nBreak-out session (meet the expert): Challenging MS samples\nProteomics on unexplored genomes\n\nSebastien Carpentier (Laboratory of tropical crop improvement\, KU Leuven\, Belgium)\n\n“Quantification and identification of allele specific proteins in a polyploid non-model crop: integration of transcriptomics and proteomics.”\n\n\nLennart Martens (Department of Biochemistry\, Compomics\, Belgium)\n\n“Into to the heart of darkness: teasing useful data from unknown genomes”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nSponsored talks: \nWaters: “A new QTof multi-mode acquisition strategy for maximising product ion selectivity\, specificity and sensitivity” (Hans Vissers) \nBruker: “From label-free quant to proteoform profiling : increasing Biomarker Discovery success rate” (Pierre-Olivier SCHMIT) \nThermo: “Advanced proteomics workflows for label free quantification experiments and protein structure analysis.” (Samy Memmi) \nSciex: “Early Detection Biomarkers for Ovarian Cancer.” (Robert Graham) \nDuring the lunch break-out session young investigators could engage in a scientific discussion with experts on specific\, technical challenges in proteomics. This time it was not about the final results\, but about the way to get there! And experts guided the young attendees. For the first “Data analysis” session with Prof. J. A. Vizcaíno and Prof. D. Fenyö\, we heard diverse questions as “why is it so hard to detect (rare) modifications?”\, “what is this false discovery rate (FDR) all about and why should it be 1%?”\, “what is the use of a p-value in determining differential protein expression?”\, “what is all this machine  learning I keep hearing about?”… On November 18th\, the break-out session was given by Prof. T. Bonaldi and Prof. C. Eyers on challenging MS samples: “How can I decide on what quantitative approach to use?”\, “How complex can I make my protocol when I want to do label-free MS?”\, “how do you quantify PTMs?”… \n \nAnd it wouldn’t be Belgium if we didn’t have our own inter-lab brewing contest!!! \n \n  \nOral presentations\nTwelve submitted scientific contributions were selected for a 15 minute oral presentation in the four sessions depicted above. \nRegistration fees:\nBePA prouds itself in making proteomics accessible to everyone\, so the rates were competitive! \n\nStudent: €75\nRegular Delegate: €100\nIndustry Delegates: €150\n\nAnd hey! You become a member of BePA (and EuPA) by registering to one of our events\, for the same price! \nSponsors:
