SUMMARY:Young Proteomics Investigators Club Webinar
DESCRIPTION:On a blind date with industry in Corona Tavern: just a fling or the start of a beautiful relationship? (Dr. Maarten Dhaenens) \n\n\n\nIn light of its simple molecular composition\, Sars-Cov-2 became a surprisingly big challenge for society and science. Fortunately\, it leaves traces in the people it infects. RNA is currently the main target in diagnosis because it can be amplified. But from the start\, the essential reagents fell short in supply and testing was curtailed. So early March 2020\, a EuBIC scientist and a YPIC veteran (Bart Van Puyvelde and myself) wondered: could proteins be detected as well? \n\n\n\nDiehard discovery people as we are\, we turned to our trusted high resolution QTOF instruments and the latest in data analysis strategies and found a promising set of 17 biomarker peptides within two weeks. But then the question came: could these peptides be detected on tandem quadrupole instruments in a clinical setting? Well\, I know these instruments contain three quadrupoles\, which mainly sounds like overkill. So\, we had to reach out and ask people that know something about targeted peptide detection if we ever wanted to make a relevant contribution. \n\n\n\nNow\, one year later\, it is safe to say that Sars-Cov-2 proteins can be directly detected using mass spectrometry (Cov-MS) and that this can be implemented in a clinical setting. Because MS is so flexible\, it will soon also detect Variants of Concern and other viruses such as influenza\, without having to convert existing MS clinical facilities. MS is here to help\, and it plans to stay. \n\n\n\nIn my talk\, I will recount the development of the test with a special acknowledgement of the power of collaboration between industry (instrument vendors and others) and academia. How there was a sense of urgency and a realization that we were amongst the happy few that could potentially make a difference. I have not read Hobbes’s Leviathan\, but while the selfish hedonist might always be a part of us\, this time at least\, it felt as if something bigger was at play… \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHave a look at Linked In. \n\n\n\nRegistration: https://lnkd.in/e-8Q29U

SUMMARY:The Human Protein Atlas – Spatial proteomics in health and disease
DESCRIPTION:By Dr. Cecilia Lindskog (Uppsala University\, Sweden) \n\n\n\nThe spatial distribution of proteins determines the morphology and function of tissues\, cells\, and organelles. Knowledge of this spatial distribution is therefore essential to understand the healthy and diseased human body. The Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project is a large-scale initiative aiming at mapping the entire human proteome using antibody-based proteomics and integration of various other omics technologies. The publicly available knowledge resource www.proteinatlas.org has grown into one of the world’s most visited biological databases. The current version is divided into six main sections\, each focusing on particular aspects of the human proteome: (a) the Tissue Atlas showing the distribution of proteins across all major tissues and organs in the human body; (b) the Single Cell Type Atlas showing expression of protein-coding genes in single human cell types; (c) the Pathology Atlas showing the impact of protein levels on survival of patients with cancer; (d) the Brain Atlas exploring the distribution of proteins in various regions of the mammalian brain; (e) the Blood Atlas describing proteins detected in the blood cell types and proteins secreted by human tissues; and (f) the Cell Atlas showing the subcellular localization of proteins in single cells. The HPA constitutes an important resource for further understanding of human biology\, and the publicly available datasets hold much promise for integration with other emerging efforts focusing on single cell analyses\, both at transcriptomic and proteomic level. \n\n\n\nSpeaker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Lindskog is a group leader at Uppsala University\, Uppsala\, Sweden. Her research focuses on integration of transcriptomics and antibody-based proteomics\, linking cell type specificity with function and mechanisms of disease. She has a PhD in pathology from the Faculty of Medicine\, Uppsala University\, and joined the Human Protein Atlas already in the early stage of the project\, more than 15 years ago. Dr. Lindskog is heading the tissue-based profiling of the Human Protein Atlas\, with main emphasis on immunohistochemistry\, antibody validation and cell type-specific localization in human normal and cancer tissues.

SUMMARY:BePAc2020: Spatial Proteomics *CANCELED*
DESCRIPTION:Protein function through space and time \n\n\n\nCHANGED DATE: This event was postponed to December 2021. \n\n\n\nEvery two years\, the Belgian Proteomics Association organizes a two-day symposium for everyone who is interested in proteins. The event is set up to facilitate collaborations and to introduce (young) people to the field of proteomics. Unfortunately\, 2020 will not have its own edition. However\, we are determined to have the meeting in December 2021 instead! \n\n\n\nThis year the symposium revolves around Spatial Proteomics. A protein’s function is not fixed and we are only gradually starting to see which role both time and space play in this. \n\n\n\nOn the first day\, we traditionally have a workshop on the principles of proteomics. You can experience first-hand how a proteomics workflow works. In turn\, this will facilitate the setup of your experimental design to maximize the chances of success in your research. \n\n\n\nThe second day\, international and national experts will show the importance of the spatial dimension in protein biology. Additionally\, young scientists will be given the chance to present their insights\, and a platform will be provided to demonstrate the latest technical innovations in the field.

SUMMARY:4th International Metaproteomics Symposium\, now in September!
DESCRIPTION:Metaproteomics is the large-scale characterisation of the entire protein complement of a microbiota directly from an environment at a given point in time. Research examining environmental and human-associated microbiomes via multi-omics is expending rapidly. Especially\, functional meta-omic approaches such as metaproteomics are currently employed intensively and provide a more comprehensive picture of multiple environments and their associated microbial communities than what could be done previously. \n\n\n\nThe International Metaproteomics Symposium is the leading event in the field of metaproteomics and related microbiome studies. The aim of the symposium is to provide a platform for the participants to share their latest results in their respective fields using metaproteomic methods as well as discussing recent technologic innovations and presenting newly developed bioinformatic tools. \n\n\n\nThe Metaproteomics Symposium welcomes international scientists from every career stage and is characterised by its human dimension and promotion of high-quality interactions. The symposium is set up in sessions with short presentations in order to give the opportunity to present to a majority of the researchers in the field.

SUMMARY:BePA introduction: What can proteomics do for you?
DESCRIPTION:Many researchers use proteomics research as a tool\, e.g. in medicine\, veterinary sciences\, bioengineering\, biology\, pharmaceutical sciences\, ecology and even within art sciences. BePA is organizing workshops for these users. Building on the success of previous workshops\, including the one at our BePA meeting 2018\, a broad selection of proteomics experts from Ghent will go over the entire workflow from sample preparation\, over data acquisition to data analysis. From 2 to 5 September\, at Rustpunt \, attendees will learn the do’s and don’ts in proteomics and to design their own experiment in order to find an answer to their protein-related questions. \nThe workshop will show (young) researchers what the capabilities of proteomics are. For those preparing a project defence (e.g. FWO)\, the course will give the complete overview required to anticipate methodological questions from the jury. For starters\, we focus on the different steps of a robust experimental design\, so that they will learn the shortest route to the answer to their biological questions on proteins. For students in the final stage of their PhD\, who used proteomics along the way\, we provide everything they need to know for their PhD defence. Attendees will in no way become experts in proteomics or mass spectrometry. However\, as they collaborate with a dedicated proteomics lab (in Ghent)\, this course will teach them the language to communicate and think along. \n \nBecause sample preparation protocols are dependent on the research question\, the samples at hand\, the data acquisition methodology and on the final data analysis approach\, each lecturer will cross reference to other days in the course. We strongly encourage attendees to subscribe to the complete course\, but we also allow subscribing for only a part of the course\, most relevant to your current interest. \nThroughout the workshop\, attendees will be allowed to bring forward their own research question in order to discuss the methodological opportunities available within the field. \n \nHere is the full program: \n
